Himlung Expedition 2025/2026

Himlung expedition (7126m) is a popular classic seven-thousand meters peak climbing trip available in Nepal for mountaineers to climb. It is located along Nepal-Tibet border in between Manaslu and Annapurna ranges.

Himalung Himal is very suitable for those who have basic mountaineering skills and eager to climb higher mountains. Himlung expedition itinerary includes two hidden and mysterious valleys, Nar and Phu. Nar- Phu area was opened for tourists very recently. The area itself is a culturally and naturally protected and is considered remote by all indicators. Therefore special permit will be required by the climbers for approaching the Himlung Mountain to climb. This expedition can be considered as an alternative trip to Ama Dablam or Baruntse expedition.

Himlung Expedition Route

Trekking will begin from Koto that lies at 2600 meters high from sea level. After three days trekking, you will reach mysterious Phu village at an altitude of 4050m. You will have rest on the following day before heading to Base Camp. All these arrangements are prepared for well acclimatization through which your body physiologically prepares to adapt the altitude. Along the way you could enjoy traditional Nepali hospitality and culture, pristine wildlife, rivers, forests and beautiful Himalayan scenery. The upper reaches of Nar and Phu villages are inhabited by people of Tibetan descent who still practices Tibetan way of life style.

The Base Camp of Himlung will set up at 4900m, a vantage point to acclimatize and observe the mountain. Three additional camps, Camp I (5400m), Camp II (6000) and Camp III (6350 m) will be made before the summit. The summit will offer splendid views of Manaslu and Annapurna ranges.

Normally, it takes about 10 to 13 days to conquer the Himlung Mountain from Base Camp to top and back to Base Camp. The last portion of mountain has steep ridges, rocks and ice that need to be tackled. Our experienced climbing Sherpa and high altitude porters are desperate to make your summit dream come true.

Best Time for Himlung Expedition

Normally, spring (March, April and May) and autumn (September, October and November) are considered as best mountaineering seasons for mountain climbing in Nepal. Usually, weather and temperature during these months remain pleasant.

Himlung Mountain was opened for expedition only in 1992, and same year it was first ascended by a Japanese team. Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition, a reliable and legally authorized expedition operating company in Nepal has extended services required for Himlung expedition from the beginning.

Himlung Expedition Altitude Profile

FAQs

Himlung is considered a moderately challenging 7000-meter peak. It's less technical than peaks like Ama Dablam or Baruntse, but still demanding due to its high altitude and long duration. The route is mostly on snow and ice, with some steep sections requiring fixed ropes, crampons, and ice axe use. Prior experience on 6000m. peaks and familiarity with basic mountaineering skills is essential for success and safety.

The Himlung expedition usually takes 28 to 32 days, including travel, acclimatization, climbing, and weather contingency. About 4–5 days are needed to reach base camp, followed by several days for acclimatization rotations to Camp I and II, before making the summit push. You’ll also need time for rest days, preparation, and safe return to Kathmandu.

The ideal climbing seasons are:

  • Autumn (October to early November) – Cold but stable weather and great views.
  • Spring (late April to May) – Warmer but may have more snowfall.

Autumn is generally favored due to clearer skies and more predictable weather patterns, which are crucial for summit attempts on high mountains.

Yes, previous high-altitude experience is crucial. Climbers should have experience trekking above 5000 meters and at least one successful expedition to a 6000m. peak (like Island Peak or Mera Peak). You must be comfortable with alpine climbing techniques, using fixed ropes, wearing crampons, and managing yourself in cold, thin-air conditions.

Absolutely—it’s often called a “training ground” for 8000m. expeditions. It’s not too technically complex, the approach is manageable, and the camps are well placed. However, it still requires physical fitness, endurance, and the ability to deal with altitude. It's an excellent stepping stone for those aiming to climb Everest or other Himalayan giants in the future.

The standard route follows:

  1. Base Camp (4900m.)
  2. Camp I (5450m.)
  3. Camp II (6000m.)
  4. Camp III (6350m.) (optional, sometimes combined with Camp II)
  5. Summit (7126m.)

The route involves snow slopes, crevasse navigation, and some steep fixed rope sections. Most of the climbing is on snow and ice, with potential for high winds and cold temperatures during the summit push.

Altitude sickness is a major concern above 5000 meters, and Himlung involves sustained time at high elevation. AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), HAPE (High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema), and HACE (High-Altitude Cerebral Edema) are risks. That’s why acclimatization rotations, gradual ascent, and rest days are crucial. Climbers should know the symptoms and carry appropriate medication like Diamox. Oxygen is not usually used unless for emergencies.

You’ll need a solid fitness foundation, including:

  • Cardio training: hiking, trail running, or cycling
  • Strength training: especially legs, core, and endurance
  • Altitude acclimatization: if possible, do a pre-expedition trek or training at elevation
  • Technical skills: practice using crampons, ice axe, and climbing with fixed ropes
  • Train for at least 3–6 months beforehand, depending on your starting fitness level.

You’ll need:

  • Himlung Himal Climbing Permit
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

These are arranged through a registered trekking/climbing agency, which will also handle logistics, liaison officers, and porter/guide arrangements.

The trek to Base Camp begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, followed by a multi-day trek through remote villages like Koto and Phu Village. The trail takes you through beautiful Nar-Phu Valley, offering a cultural and scenic experience before the serious climbing begins. The trek itself is a highlight, taking about 5–6 days to reach base camp at nearly 4900 meters.

Yes, but limited:

In towns and lower villages, mobile coverage is available.

At Base Camp and high camps, expedition teams often carry satellite phones or Garmin InReach for emergency communication and weather updates.
Wi-Fi is not available beyond the trekking phase, so you’ll be off-grid during the climb. Bring power banks or solar chargers for personal electronics.

Prices vary based on the operator, but typically range between $5,500 to $9,000 USD, depending on the level of service (logistics only vs. full-service expeditions). The cost generally includes:

  • Permits and liaison officer fees
  • Transportation to/from the trailhead
  • Food, accommodation, and tents
  • Climbing gear (group)
  • Guides, porters, and cooks

Additional expenses: personal gear, travel insurance, tips, and contingency funds.

Himlung stands out because:

  • It's less crowded, offering a peaceful experience
  • Has a high success rate compared to more technical 7,000ers
  • Offers spectacular scenery in the Nar-Phu Valley
  • Serves as a perfect training climb for 8,000-meter peaks
  • Offers real expedition logistics without extreme technicality

If you're serious about mountaineering and want a challenge that's both demanding and manageable, Himlung is an excellent choice.

Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition ensures you to provide a well planned itinerary for Himlung expedition. An experienced and highly professional climbing guide will be assigned to each climbing member. All necessary logistics will be taken care from our side. However, we expect to maintain good health and physical condition as well as well good mental preparation from your side.
